How about the fact that most plastic is made from petroleum...and, um...we're almost out of that stuff as it is. Why are we wrapping our food in it?

I don't know if "food inc" covers this issue (haven't seen it yet), but one particular pet peeve of mine as it pertains to food is plastic.

plastic is relatively new (only 100 years old or so), but we store everything in plastic. Remember when the milk man delivered your milk in glass bottles?

Forget the fact that plastic is polluting our oceans, the additional problem is that when plastic moves from extreme temperature changes, chemicals seep into our food. So, when trucks move plastic bottles... the temperature in those trucks is extreme heat. By the time the bottles are delivered to our grocery stores, its like chemical soup. We also use plastic containers in our homes to store food... some of us even put them in microwaves.

There's not a whole lot of resistance out there on this, my guess is primarily because plastic is a HUGE business for food suppliers and info is being suppressed. But my hunch is that in the near future, we will discover plastic to be the main culprit to many of our health issues. Nicotine will be small potatoes (no pund intended) compared to what we learn about plastic residue and chemical usage.

Anyway, I know this has nothing to do with the vegetarian post, but thought I would add my thoughts to this discussion.
